Worlds 100 Most Beautiful Hotels 2016

our pick of the world’s most beautiful hotels in Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the world’s most vibrant cities, and is home to a great selection of beautiful hotels. During a recent trip I stayed in 12 different hotels and only regretted not being able to stay in more.

banyan tree shanghai on the bund

OMG I love Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund. The decor is stunning, and even the entry level suites are an enormous 60m2. And what is it with that bathtub!? The Oasis with Romantic Pool and Panorama Oasis with Romantic Pool, with their ‘pool’ with a view, are amazing. The hotel also has some stunning dining options – I particularly love Ming Yuan restaurant, and I’m always a bit fan of a rooftop bar, so TOPS, with it’s 180 degree panoramic views looks fabulous.

the peninsula shanghai

Peninsula Shanghai is described as ‘The Peninsula Hotel’s most luxuriously comfortable and technologically advanced yet’… and that is quite a claim. The gorgeous Art Deco interiors represent the return of classic luxury to Shanghai – even the entry-level Superior Room impresses and by the time you move up to the suites you are truly in Art Deco heaven.

There are four themed suites, which are all stunning. The Astor Suite has a large private terrace with views over the river and city. The Majestic Suite outdoes it, with its double-height lounge and dining room and sublime black marble bathroom, and the Peninsula Suite has a fabulous floral patterning behind the bed which works to great effect with the deco-style swirling carpet.

Having said all this, the highlight for me in the stunning navy and white tiled art deco pool, which must be one of the world’s most beautiful indoor pools.

the puLi

PuLi’s 193 rooms and 36 suites blend old world charm with the comforts and amenities of modern life. The style is sophisticated, modern and chic, but there are references back to earlier times in items like the stoneware head rest you’ll find in the bathroom, the bronze mirrors on display in the club lounge, the brass incense burners in the lounge rooms of the suites and the timber foo dogs in some of the rooms. The hotel has a 32-metre Long Bar, which offers one of Shanghai’s “longest” wine and champagne selections by the glass, a 120 seat restaurant, and a health club equipped with gymnasium, sauna, steam room, experiential showers, jacuzzi pool, 25-metre lap infinity pool as well as the first Anantara Spa in Shanghai.

ritz-carlton shanghai, pudong

The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong occupies the upper floors of a new 58 story town in the heart of Pudong. There is an attractive indoor pool, an open air Flair bar that boasts spectacular views and a beautiful modern-deco Sky Lobby. But it is the rooms and suites that are the main drawcard for me. Not surprisingly given the elevation and location, the views are fabulous, and some of the accommodations include stunning bathtubs with views. I love the sophisticated and understated Carlton Suite, but the ultimate wow is provided by the Ritz-Carlton Suite which has a fabulous bathroom and a richly coloured palette complete with glamorous mirrors.

mandarin oriental pudong shanghai

In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t think that there is a Mandarin Oriental hotel anywhere in the world that I don’t love. But I’m particularly impressed with the Mandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai. I love the rooms and suites all the way from the entry level Deluxe River View Room to the amazing Presidential Suite. Frette linen, a bold, contemporary design with traditional Oriental touches, plush patterned carpets, and spacious bathrooms include a large soaking tub… and that’s the entry level! I also love the super-chic Yong Yi Ting restaurant, and fans of Mandarin Oriental should not be surprised that Mandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai has an amazing Spa – this one covers nearly 2500m2 and includes a crystal steam room, aroma experience showers and sauna.
