The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok has apparently been a hotel for 140 years – quite an achievement. It certainly has a great location on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
The accommodation styles are a bit hit and miss for me, but when they get it right – the newly renovated section – there are some beautiful rooms and suites. I’m particularly attracted to the Garden Room and Garden Suite, with their colonial-inspired design combined with chic contemporary touches, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the garden and river. And of course, the top end suites are all fabulous.
The Bamboo Bar is one of my favourite bars in Bangkok – it has a colonial jazz style – a great spot for a cocktail. There is also a spa, a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi and a choice of two pools – a wading pool surrounded by cabanas for relaxing dips and a 25-metre long pool, ideal for swimming laps.
